comparison of some researching ways


Write a summary of the disadvantages of the following modes of research: focus group, survey and interview. Compare your text with the model. This is a non-graded activity.

Focus group:
Strong or forceful members of the group might influence other people to their way of thinking. The moderator may not be neutral.

Survey:
People are often too busy to participate in high street surveys. Telephone surveys can be expensive. Surveys sent through the mail don't always get good return
Who:      Springfield University 
What:     Research project comparing first year students' attitudes toward traditional classroom vs. e-learning environments, including mature students and school leavers entering university; qualitative research to find out whether students would want to attend classes in a virtual classroom in vacation time, how often, and why
When:    Starting in the fall for three months
Why:       University considering building a virtual classroom rates. Online surveys are quick, but subject to possible computer problems.

Interview:
Can be expensive to conduct if done 1:1. Success can be dependent on skills and abilities of the interviewer.
