Smartphones and Health Promotion: A Review of the Evidence

Abstract
Communication via mobile phones has become anessential tool for health professionals. The latest generation ofsmartphones is comparable to computers, allowing the devel-opment of new applications in health field. This paper aims todescribe the use of smartphones by health professionals andpatients in the field of health promotion. We conducted abibliographic search through Pubmed. Then, research resultswere analyzed critically in order to select the best experiencesavailable. All searches were carried out on November 2012and were not limited by date. Each item from the initial searchwas reviewed independently by members of the project team.Initial search returned 472 items with PubMed. After theremoval of duplicates, 406 items were reviewed by all themembers of the project team and 21 articles were identified asspecifically centered on health promotion.
1) nutrition field there are applications that allow to count calories andkeep a food diary or more specific platforms for people withfood allergies,
2) physical activity many applicationssuggest exercises with measurement of sports statistics.
3)Some applications deal with lifestyles suggestions and tips.
4)Eldly . Finally,some positive experiences are reported in the prevention offalls in elderly and of sexually-transmitted diseases.
Smartphones are transforming the ways of communicationbut the lack of monitoring of contents, the digital divide, theconfidentiality of data, the exclusion of the health professionalfrom the management of patient, are the main risks related to their use.
