Stage 1 find the right fit
Assess fit do you have the time expertise and experience to help
Identify other resources of guidance
Stage2: develope a shared understanding
Listen actively and suspend judgment
Ask open questions to broaden understanding and shift to more detailed probes
Have a complete picture and agree on what type of advice
Stage three craft alternatives
Understand and articulate your role as guidance not making decision
Push to generate several viable choices
Spell out the rationale personal experiences and principles behind youe advice
Stage four converge on a decision
Ensure that all the decision options are evaluated dont jump too quickly to a solution
Pause frequently for reactions
Convey your availability for further clarification and elaboration
Stage five put advice into action
Reaffirm the decision and consequences are the seekers
Convey your availability for additional guidance and support
